How to Backup WordPress Safely Before Major Changes
-
Decide what “major change” means:
-
Theme change
-
Bulk plugin updates
-
Migration
-
WooCommerce changes
-
-
Take two backups (recommended):
-
Files backup (ZIP your site files)
-
Database export (SQL via phpMyAdmin)
-
-
Put your site into low-risk mode (optional):
-
Schedule during low traffic.
-
Disable heavy caching temporarily if you’re troubleshooting.
-
-
Perform updates in small batches:
-
Update 1–3 plugins
-
Test critical pages (homepage, checkout/forms, login)
-
Repeat
-
-
Keep a rollback plan:
-
If something breaks, you can restore files/DB from your backup.
-
-
Clear cache after major changes:
-
Purge your LiteSpeed Cache cache (see the caching article below).
-
